Main Points – It’s Easy, Cheap and it Works Fantastic!

It’s Cheap To Fish With Bread

It’s Easy To Fish With Bread for Carp

It’s also incredibly easy depending on which method you choose to use the bread for. You can opt to just take two slices of bread with you in a Ziploc bag on your next carp fishing trip, or you can use a food processor to get a bit more advanced. Either way, it’s easy.

For the two slices of bread method, a #1 circle hook and a decent baitcasting reel is all you need and you can be reeling in carp simply by rolling it up with your fingers and fishing with bread balls. Easy as 1,2,3.

And It Works!

I don’t think anyone reading this can honestly say they have never caught one carp using bread. It’s just an easy bait to use, and it works.

I’m not saying every time. Just like any fishing, you will have some good days and some bad days. It’s what makes it a sport. If you’re a beginner to carp fishing, you just need to learn the ropes a bit, and it will get much more comfortable.

You can start with my post about top methods in general for catching carp.

If you can effectively scout a lovely downed tree in the water or any area with snags and vegetation, fishing with bread balls will work just fine.

Pro Tip: Scout your areas a bit before fishing for carp. Look for the fish near the snags or the shore.

Sometimes they can be tough to spot. A good pair of polarized sunglasses will help immensely in some circumstances but not all time depending on the water conditions.

You can look for…

  • Shadows of the Fish Moving Around
  • Tail fin Movement or a fanning tail
  • Carp nearly surfaced near weeds and brush on sunny days

The bubbles in the Water

If you’re using the natural method and fishing with bread balls, you will be able to tell your chances of success early.

Once you toss your bread ball out gently near the downed trees or other brush, don’t only pay attention to your carp fishing line or your cell phone.

Watch for additional movement. You may see the carp through the water begin coming out of cover or notice bubbles on the water surface.

This is a huge sign that you may have some luck. Of course, you could have bluegill messing around with the bread balls as well, but nonetheless, success is probably right around the corner.

Also, give it some time. Carp is not an instant catch. You need some patience and the willingness to move locations if your scouting report is telling you to do so.

My 5 Tips to Fishing With Bread For Carp

Here is my Top Tips for Fishing With Bread for Carp!

Tip #1: How To Keep Bread On A Fishing Hook

How do you keep the bread on the fishing hook?

The plain and simple answer would be, it depends on which method you are using fishing with bread for carp.

If you are using the most straightforward approach of just rolling the bread with your fingers into a ball and placing it on the #1 size circle hook (Check them out on Amazon), you won’t be keeping the bread on the fishing hook for very long.

You will need to rebait somewhat frequently which is perfectly fine.

Bluegill and other small species of fish will be all over the bread as well so reeling in to roll a new bread ball is not the end of the world.

It’s just how it is, and you can’t really avoid it using this method.

You do have alternatives however to fishing with bread for carp. Let’s discuss a few of those.

Tip #2: Bread Bags for Carp or PVA Bags

PVA bags are a newer technique for carp fishing. Well, maybe not new but it’s gaining in popularity quickly.

They work great. They just require more set up. You can find literally hundreds of different combinations of carp baits in a PVA bag. For the sake of this blog post, however, all we care about is fishing with bread.

Tip #3: How to Prepare Bread for Fishing

To do this, you’re going to want to liquidize your bread. You will need a

  • Food Processor
  • Bowl for the Bait
  • And Of Course, the Bread

Here’s a quick way to get the process going for you.

  1. Place the bread in your food processor/ liquidizer
  2. Turn on your food processor. Let is process for about 60-75 Seconds
  3. Empty the Bread into your bowl

Repeat this process as many times as you would like to get the bread as fine as you need for your desired set up

You can then either use an old bottle sprayer filled with water or just simply get your hand wet and move it throughout your breadcrumbs to get the consistency you’re looking for.

Tip #4: Do You Need to use Additives to the Breadcrumbs?

You don’t necessarily need to use additives for breadcrumbs to work but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

..Looking for Addtives? Checkout Additives for Carp Fishing on Amazon.

If you remember from some of my other blog posts, carp have very keen sight and smell. The carp’s senses are something to appeal to if you want to go the extra mile.

There’s no right or wrong way to do this. You can use basic food coloring if you’re only looking for some color and not scent.

Some prefer to really brighten up the bread as much as possible with colors that contrast well with the underwater environment.

Reds and bright colors like pink can work well.

Something like GOO Wonder Berry or Bumble Berry could be a great solution. They have bright, vibrant colors that can make a big difference in the visual appearance of your bait.

Tip #5: How to Make Mashed Bread Ground bait

This is another method you can use to fishing with bread for carp.

It’s slightly different than using the food processor method for breaking down the bread.

Mashed bread will have the same benefits of using the liquidized bread.

All you need to do is.

  • Get a few loaves of bread.
  • Keep the bread out until nearly 100% Stale
  • Ball up the bread and place it in the bucket of water and leave for a few minutes
  • Continue to add additional water until you have correct consistency.
  • Go Carp Fishing with bread

The biggest thing to remember with all these baits and bread methods for carp fishing is the tightness and packing methods.

  • You don’t want the consistency ever to be too packed or tight.
  • You want the bread to be breaking through the water on its way down and dissolving nicely on the water bottom.
  • You can use other additives to the bread crumbs or mashed bread just like other methods of bread fishing.
  • You can also try to add paste or bran.

This mashed bread, in my opinion, is a bit more outdated and think the new technique is using the liquidizer.

The liquidizer I have found that it can create more fine particles of the bread that easily break and dissolve in the water which ultimately leads to more carp in your net!
